Job Description
As the Building Envelope Lead Engineer for a structural and building science consulting firm, you will be the principal authority in their envelope department. Providing technical expertise on a range of projects new and existing. In addition to project and team responsibilities,
you will play a key role in business development and client outreach. Your decision-making will shape project scope, investigation plans, and specifications, guided by client feedback and relevant data.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Building Science, Architectural Science, or Engineering Technology.
Responsibilities:
- Initiate and maintain communication with clients, discussing technical aspects, project costs, and timelines. Resolve complex client issues and provide technical assistance regarding product inspections and follow-up services.
- Mentor and train team members as the division grows.
- Attend Condo Board meetings as needed, including after-hours visits.
- Conduct initial assessments, prepare reports, and make recommendations, including cost estimates for construction projects.
- Create design drawings and comprehensive specifications in compliance with the Ontario Building Code and industry standards, including front-end documents and CCDC-2 contracts.
- Offer tendering services to ensure a fair and transparent bidding process for clients.
- Manage contract administration during the construction phase of projects.
- Oversee complex project activities, ensuring smooth initiation, maintenance, completion, and closure of assignments. Act as the reviewer of record when assigned.
- Communicate project status and outcomes to clients through regular updates and detailed reports.
- Provide leadership and technical guidance on special projects that present complex challenges.
- Develop project programs, ensuring alignment with requirements and facilitating communication about any changes in project scope.
- Address customer inquiries, technical issues, and complaints.
- Contribute to business development discussions and brainstorming sessions to drive growth.
Requirements:
- Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in delivering complex building envelope projects. Proven management and design experience in building envelope repair or replacement projects, including roofing, cladding, sealants, waterproofing, curtain walls, and windows.
- P. Eng. designation is an asset.
- Expertise in building envelope and water leakage investigations, Building Condition Assessments (BCAs), Reserve Fund Studies, Tarion Performance Audits, and Construction Commissioning (BECx).
- Experience in thermal analysis and energy modeling.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD (required) and Revit (preferred).
- Strong understanding of the Ontario Building Code, Toronto Building Code Bylaws, and fundamental building envelope principles.
- Proven ability to cultivate relationships and develop networks within the industry.
- Extensive knowledge of construction industry practices.
- Strong project management skills, particularly in complex or novel projects.
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
- Strong time management skills and commitment to meeting deadlines.
- Swing stage training and experience are considered assets.
- LEED Certification from the Canada Green Building Council is preferred.
- Valid driver’s license and the ability to travel efficiently throughout the GTA are advantageous.
